Overview

Support for diverse learners

All students are unique learners, with diverse strengths, experiences and learning needs. This diversity enriches classrooms and strengthens teaching, learning and assessment. Teachers can use the Victorian Curriculum F–10 to support the diversity of learners in their classrooms.

When planning for teaching, learning and assessment, teachers use the continuum of learning in the Victorian Curriculum F–10 to make appropriate adjustments for students with diverse learning needs. This includes students with varying levels of achievement, students learning English as an additional language (EAL), students with intellectual or cognitive disability or learning delay, and gifted and high-ability students.

Using assessment data and other evidence, teachers can identify where students are in their learning and plan appropriate next steps. This may involve selecting more suitable curriculum levels or bands or using the relevant EAL pathway to support English language learners. The continuum of learning helps teachers provide inclusive, responsive and appropriately challenging learning opportunities so all students can access the curriculum, participate meaningfully and make progress.
